Our Story: Why We Created Amanda’s Big Dream
A few years ago, a children’s book was published about a girl who was poor at sports, unpopular in school and bullied by her peers. She went on a diet, lost weight, and then became the popular star of her sports team.
Independently, we were each appalled by this message!
“As a therapist, I work with adults who struggle with the diet/binge cycle, a struggle that often began in their childhood years. I know that putting kids on diets is a recipe for promoting lifelong battles with food, eating disorders, body dissatisfaction and—most insidious of all—feelings of shame.”
“As a teacher, I’ve had personal experience with hundreds upon hundreds of students who hated their bodies, no matter what size they were. I saw girls limit their dreams, ignore their talents and minimize their accomplishments by focusing on body size and weight loss.”
Elizabeth put out a call:
“I’m so dismayed by this book’s message that I will illustrate a children’s book if someone is interested in writing it!”
Although they had never met,
Judith loved Elizabeth’s illustrations and jumped at the chance to work with her.
Through a fun and creative collaboration, Amanda’s Big Dream was born!
